Composition Glycerol B.P.(syn. Glycerin) Actions Glycerol is an osmotic dehydrating agent with hygroscopic and lubricating properties. Indications Used in pharmaceutical preparations as a lubricating and moisturising agent and as a vehicle, solvent, sweetening agent and preservative. Used in topical preparations for its lubricating and moisturising properties. Used in liquid preparations as a vehicle, solvent, sweetening agent and preservative. Contraindications Cardiac failure, renal disease if used orally. Precautions Use with caution on dehydrated patients if used orally. Adverse Effects Glycerol's adverse effects are mainly due to its dehydrating action. If taken by mouth, glycerol may cause headache, nausea and vomiting.
